Google Speed Update

As per the announcement in January 2018, about Google Speed Update, is now officially rolled out and considered that it is going to be a big threat to slow loading sites in mobile search. It will be a ranking factor as well for its search engine results. If you remember, the search giant had said that it will start considering page speed while ranking websites in mobile searches it promises to lower the rankings of slow web pages. Its been 6 months from the announcement (Officially known as-“Speed Update”) and finally it is on the system as per the plan.

Google had claimed that “people really care about the speed of a page” as a reason for using a page’s speed in the ranking algorithm for mobile searches and also informed that the update will apply the same standard to all pages regardless of the technology that they are built with.

Here is the official tweet from Google:

Previously, page speed was only a ranking factor in desktop searches. While fast, mobile-optimized sites were always a recommendation, speed was never a full fledged ranking factor in mobile search results.

Now the speed at which a piece of content loads is a consideration when ranking mobile pages. Obviously, the faster the better.

What the Update Means is-

If your site is super speed and your competitors are too, then you might not notice the hit of the algorithmic update but slowest loading sites, definitely going to be hit by Google’s Speed Update. Earlier it used to give more priorities to fast loading speed sites resulting higher rank on SERP for desktop devices. Now also the same rule applies to all mobile devices and their searches.

Lastly, with the latest major update, Relevancy is key, as Google always says. So if a slow loading page happens to contain the most relevant content, according to a user’s query, then it may still rank favorably in search results.

Hence, focus on your content relevancy, quality and lastly site speed to give best user experience and you get a higher rank for sure.
